Auckland legends of self loathing, Bridge Burner, chatted with us as part of our Two Minutes With series.
Catch them, with fellow locals Shallow Grave, as they support Weedeater and Conan on July 13 at the Kings Arms.
Describe your music in five words or less?
Illness and loathing.
What’s going on in the world of Bridge Burner?
We are currently demoing for our debut full length. We have five songs in various states of completion at the moment. We have also tracked a song that we’ve shot a video for, which should be out in the near future. We also have a tonne of shows coming up, including Conan and Weedeater this week!
What motivates you to make music?
For me personally, I have been playing in bands and making music for over 16 years now. I don't think I could be without it. It is true catharsis and makes it possible to exist in a world as shitty as the one we live in. It gives me a way to channel the misery and anger that stems from said existence.
What have been the high and low points of your musical experiences so far?
The high point has been having a band that isn't a melodic death metal band for once haha! But seriously, I feel that Bridge Burner really aligns with how I feel. The music is a perfect vehicle for what I need to be writing about now, and the new material we are constructing is EXACTLY the kind of music I want to be making.
So the high point for me is every time we get into the rehearsal room and hearing the slabs of (musical) muck take form. The low point would be losing our drummer when the band was in its infancy. The upside being we managed to snag Cam Sinclair—ex-Dioclection/Witchrist—who is a MONSTER.
What music are you listening to at the moment?
Conan is on heavy rotation of course! Aside from that have been thrashing the following lately:
40 Watt Sun—The Inside Room
Throane—Derrière-Nous, La Lumière
Plebian Grandstand—False Highs, True Lows
If you were stranded on a desert island, which member of the band would get eaten first? And why?
I think Cam would eat the rest of us, as he is the biggest and scariest. Or maybe Josh, because he is always hungry. I think Taz and I would be doomed.
Here’s an opportunity to bitch about something, whether music related or not. What really pisses you off?
Most things these days. I would have to say the vast inequality, hypocrisy and injustice that exists in almost every aspect of modern life.
You’re putting together your perfect gig featuring New Zealand artists. Who would you get to play and where? Feel free to include acts/DJs/bands/venues that no longer exist.
Tickets from lifeisnoise.com, Oztix, the venues and undertheradar.co.nz for Wellington and Auckland.
